  4. YOU MUST HAVE ALL FOUR ENTOMBED ARCHIVES IN ORDER TO RUN THIS GAME.

  11. ENTOMBED REQUIRES EITHER 640x480 OR 800x600 256 COLOUR DISPLAY.

  13. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ALL OF THESE...

  15. To install Entombed 1.0 for Windows on your hard drive:
  16.  
  17.  1A. If you have downloaded Entombed as an archive, then make sure
  18.      that you have download all four archives. These are named
  19.      entv1_1.zip through to entv1_4.zip.  Unzip the contents of
  20.      these archives onto a floppy disk or separate directory.
  21.  
  22.  1B. If you have received Entombed on a floppy disk directly from
  23.      Chaos Concepts, then this has already been done for you.
  24.  
  25.  2.  Place the disk in the floppy drive of your computer.
  26.  
  27.  3.  Open the file menu of the Windows program manager and select Run.
  28.  
  29.  4.  In the Run dialogue box, type A:ESETUP or B:ESETUP, or as is
  30.      appropriate.
  31.  
  32.  5.  Now that you are in the ESETUP utility, confirm that the
  33.      installation directory matches the actual directory where the
  34.      archives can be found. If it does not then enter the correct path
  35.      in the installation directory text box.
  36.  
  37.  6.  Next you may choose to modify the drive Entombed will be installed
  38.      on to.
  39.  
  40.  7A. Next you choose the archives you wish to install.  If you have
  41.      downloaded entombed from a BBS then there will be four of these.
  42.      One by one you must click on each Archive button to install the
  43.      contents of each archive.
  44.  
  45.  7B. If you received entombed on a disk directly from Chaos Concepts
  46.      then all you need do is click on the first archive button.
  47.  
  48.  8.  Next select the sound options you require. If you are not sure
  49.      which ones match your sound card then leave these options
  50.      unchecked and consult your sound card documentation. You can
  51.      change these options later from within the Entombed game
  52.      application.
  53.  
  54.  9.  Finally the installation program will reboot your system to
  55.      initialise the changes you have made.

  57.      Note:
  58.  
  59.      From within Program Manager, you may need to select Arrange Icons
  60.      from the window menu, in order to tidy up the desktop.

  63. How to start and quit entombed:
  64.  
  65.      To Start Entombed, open the Chaos Concepts program manager
  66.      window, then double click on the Entombed icon.
  67.  
  68.      For more instructions press the F1 or H key from within entombed,
  69.      to bring up on-line help.

  71.      To Quit Entombed holding down the ALT key press the F4 key.

  74. Purchasing the commercial release of entombed.
  75.  
  76.     Chaos Concepts, the creators of Entombed believe entertainment
  77.     software prices are too high. Our research indicates that many
  78.     game players in fear of spending good money on a lousy game,
  79.     pirate software before they buy it to try it out. They also
  80.     jointly buy entertainment software with their friends in order to
  81.     reduce the purchase cost. Some simply pirate game software
  82.     because they can't afford to buy all the games that they would
  83.     like to play.  Because of this we decided to let you try out our
  84.     game free of charge.
  85.  
  86.     If you like this program then you are free to use it for as long
  87.     as you like. The Entombed ver 1.0 shareware release contains the
  88.     entire first level of the Entombed game. If you want to see how
  89.     the game continues and play it through to the end then you will
  90.     have to purchase the commercial release of Entombed. The
  91.     commercial release of Entombed is not shareware and you must
  92.     purchase it in order to use it.

  94.     If you think the shareware release is good, then wait till you see
  95.     the commercial release, it contains three new game levels which
  96.     include morphing, animation, fully rendered 3D graphics, digitised 
  97.     speech and comes in a designed box. ( There is a photo of it in 
  98.     the game ).

  100.     Commercial release owners also have access to the hint line
  101.     section of our BBS, this has been set up to give you clues on how
  102.     to solve the many puzzles, should you get stuck. When you finish
  103.     the commercial release of Entombed you can also send us your save
  104.     game and you will receive a certificate of completion.

  106.     Purchasing the commercial release will entitle you to telephone
  107.     support, special access to our BBS, notification of updates and
  108.     other worthwhile things. More to the point, it will make you feel
  109.     good.  We haven't infested the program with excessive beg notices,
  110.     crippled it or had it verbally insult you after ten days so we
  111.     trust you to support Entombed if you like it.

  159.     The bulletin board always has the most recent versions of all our
  160.     shareware on it, free for downloading, it also has bug fixes,
  161.     drivers and other relevant information. It only exists to support
  162.     Chaos Concepts software and is available twenty-four hours a day.
  163.     The protocol is 1200, 2400 baud, or 9600 baud v.32bis,
  164.     eight data bits, no parity and one stop bit.

  170. System requirements:

  172.     Entombed 1.0 for Windows requires Windows 3.1 or better, a MS-
  173.     mouse or compatible windows pointing device, 2 megabytes of system
  174.     ram, a 512k SVGA display card and driver that supports the 640 x
  175.     480 256 colour SVGA mode, Dos 5.0 or better and 6 Mb of free hard
  176.     disk space.

  178.     Entombed for Windows has been written in Microsoft C++ and has
  179.     been tested with Microsoft Windows 3.1, If you have any problems
  180.     with Entombed.. or just some comments.. we'd like to hear from you.

  183. Compression:
  184.  
  185.     As you may have realised the Entombed 1.0 graphics are
  186.     uncompressed and so consequently take up 6 megabytes of hard disk
  187.     space. The Entombed program does support on the fly decompression
  188.     of it's graphic files. However because compressed files do not
  189.     archive as efficiently as uncompressed files the designers decided
  190.     to disable file compression in order to make the archive as small
  191.     as possible seeing Entombed 1.0 is a shareware release. So
  192.     although Entombed 1.0 takes up a more hard disk space, the archive
  193.     will fit on one 1.44 mb floppy disk and also requires less time to
  194.     download from bulletin boards. The commercial version of the game
  195.     has the compression enabled, and only requires 8 megabytes of hard
  196.     disk space for the entire game which is over 30 megabytes of
  197.     graphics uncompressed.

  200. Entombed Error Messages:
  201.  
  202. type (1) files missing
  203.  
  204.     This error will be reported if files required by Entombed are
  205.     missing. The solution is to re-install Entombed using the ESETUP
  206.     program. However leave the "Install to program manager" option
  207.     unchecked.
  208.  
  209. type (2) memory low
  210.  
  211.     This error message indicates that windows system resources are
  212.     low.  If this happens, save your game and close Entombed. Then
  213.     from the windows desktop close any open applications that you are
  214.     currently not using. Alternatively you could create a larger
  215.     virtual drive using the "386 Enhanced" utility within the windows
  216.     control panel.
  217.  
  218.     If you ignore this error and continue to use Entombed while memory
  219.     is low, then the Entombed application will automatically close if
  220.     memory runs out.

  223. type (3) display detection error (message box)
  224.  
  225.     This error appears if the Entombed game application didn't detect
  226.     a 256 colour display adaptor. Entombed does this by checking the
  227.     display.drv entry in your System.ini under the heading boot
  228.     description. Your system.ini should have an entry that looks like
  229.     this...

  232.     display.drv=Video 7 1Mb, 640x480 256 colours
  233.  
  234.     What Entombed does, is search for the characters "256" in the
  235.     display.drv entry.  If it doesn't find them it prompts you with a
  236.     type (3) error message before starting the game. If you have a 256
  237.     colour display but it is not set to a 256 colour mode, please use
  238.     your windows setup program to do so. If your display is set to a
  239.     256 colour mode and you still receive this error message, you can
  240.     either choose to ignore it or edit your system.ini. If you want to
  241.     edit the system.ini, use the windows program sysedit in the system
  242.     directory and simply add "256" to the end of the display.drv entry
  243.     under the boot description heading.

  246. type (4) required files missing (message box)
  247.  
  248.     This error will be reported if files required by Entombed are
  249.     missing or if you have renamed the Entombed directory. The simple
  250.     solution is to re-install Entombed using the ESETUP program. When
  251.     Entombed is installed ESETUP creates a file in your windows
  252.     directory called Entombed.ini which contains information used by
  253.     Entombed. The Entombed path is stored in an entry called Dir under
  254.     the startup heading.
  255.

  259.     If your choose to change or rename the Entombed directory, then
  260.     be sure to update the startup entry in the Entombed.ini file.

  263. type (5) save game file missing (message box)
  264.  
  265.     Entombed comes with a save game file called "ENTOMBED.SAV" you
  266.     may exchange this with friends, or make backups of it etc.
  267.     However do not run the Entombed game application without the
  268.     "ENTOMBED.SAV" file.  Never try to edit your Entombed save game
  269.     data.  This is a binary data file and if it becomes corrupted,
  270.     the Entombed game application will become unstable.

  273. Midi problems:
  274.  
  275.     In the event that your sound driver fails, you will need to reload
  276.     your midi driver.  Do this by running the "drivers" utility within
  277.     the windows control panel. Click on "add" and select your existing
  278.     sound driver from the list. Click on "current" and then select
  279.     "restart windows". This will reset your midi driver.

  282. Midi mapping:
  283.  
  284.     If you have a midi sound device, you will need to map it to
  285.     general midi using the "MIDI mapper" utility within the windows
  286.     control panel.  If you have a sound blaster card then we recommend
  287.     you map your midi to "Adlib general".

  290. Reporting bugs:
  291.  
  292.     While we have tested Entombed 1.0 thoroughly, it's possible that
  293.     you may encounter a situation we haven't anticipated. If this
  294.     happens, we would be interested in knowing about it so we can fix
  295.     it.

  297. Here's how to report a bug to us.
  298.  
  299.     Copy your ENTOMBED.SAV, ENTOMBED.INI, WIN.INI, SYSTEM.INI,
  300.     CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files onto a floppy. Provide a
  301.     description of what you did and what happened,  and tell us with
  302.     as much detail as possible what sort of hardware you're using.
  303.  
  304.     Alternately, ZIP up the relevant files and upload them to our
  305.     bulletin board.
  306.  
  307.     If we can't recreate it, we probably won't be able to fix it.

  309.     Before you contact us with a problem, please make sure you've read
  310.     this document thoroughly and that you understand the system
  311.     requirements and how the software should work.

  318.     determine whether they wish to purchase the commercial release of
  319.     Entombed.
